In stereo reproduction, signals from 20 Hz to 20 kHz need to be replayed. Large multi-way monitoring systems will reproduce such a wide bandwidth evenly. With multichannel audio, professional and consumer audio systems must also be able to reproduce audio between 20 Hz and 20 kHz for each channel.
To achieve this, main monitors, subwoofers and crossover electronics should work together. A Bass Management system uses either analogue electronic circuitry or software based filtering which will filter low frequency information from the main channels and route that information to one, or more, subwoofer feed.
The dedicated LFE channel can also be monitored via that subwoofer and added to the low frequencies of the other main channels. If the ISS circuit does not find any audio on the input for a period of time, it sets the loudspeaker to a low-power sleep state and the loudspeaker will consume less than 0. When an input signal is detected, the loudspeaker immediately turns itself on.
Basically, the loudspeaker system will start saving power as soon as work is interrupted. In this mode, the monitor is only powered on and off using the mains power switch. The demands placed on subwoofers over the last years have increased substantially to the point where traditional design concepts are no longer valid. For Genelec, in order to achieve the absolute best performance possible, bold initiatives must be taken.
Drawing on years of acoustic research and knowledge, Genelec's engineering group accepted the challenges placed upon them in the beginning of the 21st Century. It provides excellent laminar flow characteristics with minimal turbulence noise and enables an optimal packing of a very long reflex tube into a small space.
The learnings from the LSE Technology are also utilized in the reflex port design of our aluminium enclosure products.
The spiral-shaped design yields an extremely rigid enclosure exterior while also forming the subwoofer's integral port. The fact that one is part of the other means that air flow in and out of the enclosure's interior through the port is totally unrestricted.
This results in an extraordinarily accurate and responsive low-frequency system with measured second and third harmonic distortion levels typically better than 30 dB below the fundamental. The result is a product range with impeccable technical performance: The Genelec LSE subwoofer range is unique, complete, functional, different from any other products on the market, and consistent. In a typical 2-way loudspeaker system, the active crossover needs two power amplifiers — one for the woofer and one for the tweeter.
Each driver-specific power amplifier has only a limited frequency range to amplify the power amplifier is placed after the active crossover and this adds to the ease of design. When working in critical audio production environments it is essential that monitoring systems remain reliable and functional at all times. The protection circuitry prevents driver failures by detecting signal levels, and in case of sudden peaks or constantly too high levels, taking the signal level down automatically.
Of course this feature does not affect the sound quality in any way when working within the specifications of the loudspeaker, but only prevents inadequate input signals from breaking the loudspeaker. The last decade has experienced a rapid increase in global media content creation, resulting in significant changes in the way network facilities deal with increased workload.
Now, more than ever, a growing number of audio productions are done in tighter, more confined working environments. This increases acoustic problems and lowers the reliability of monitoring. At the same time, a professional audio engineer needs to have high confidence in a reliable and precise monitoring system that reproduces sound neutrally and without distortion. They are an indispensable tool for audio professionals, as they are capable to automatically adapt to the acoustic environments and correct for levels, delays and room anomalies.
The GLM 3 software is a highly intuitive and powerful monitor control networking system that manages connectivity to all SAM studio monitors and subwoofers on the network — up to All parameters and settings are stored in system setup files or saved in each individual monitor or subwoofer if the GLM network needs to be disconnected.
Also, all acoustical features of SAM Systems can be optimised for different working styles or client demands. Additionally, even if the monitors or the production projects move between rooms, you can expect SAM technology to achieve the highest consistency in monitoring, providing a neutral sound stage imaging with low distortion. Genelec SAM Systems offers a comprehensive, solution-oriented, intelligently networked product range supporting analogue and digital signals in virtually any working environment.
Farang was the first restaurant to be opened a decade ago by BW Restaurants Oy, a private company owned by well-known Finnish chef, Matti Wikberg. Drago Studios, owned by the Secuoya Group, have just completed a major renovation of their facilities in Madrid, which now seals their position as the most advanced audiovisual production centre in Spain. The multi-room project - which includes both immersive and 5.
The purpose-built facility was created to help the post house move into international markets, with a 7. Offering three concentrations — Recording and Production, Marketing and Promotion, and Manufacturing and Merchandising — the program has its hub in the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio on campus. The monitors were purchased through Guitar Center Professional in Greensboro, NC, and the array was installed by a team of over a dozen seniors in the Music Industry Studies program, who also built much of the rest of the Atmos room, under the supervision of Scott Wynne, the Director for the Gilley Recording Studio and Professor for the Music Industry Studies program.
The subwoofer is freestanding on the floor. Wynne says GLM allows the production program to move the monitors around the room as needed for various types of productions, without ever losing ideal speaker placement for imaging and phasing.
In the process, he adds, the GLM software became part of the teaching process. You can then physically show that to your students and say, all right, what do you think these problems are culminating from?
And they can make suggestions: what if we moved the speakers back? What if we moved them a little bit closer? I think they complement the space and the students all love it. Everything about them allowed us to feel like we have a very unique room here. Having started his career as a sound engineer, Philip studied film sound before joining EA Dice and working on their Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield titles.
Two years ago he transitioned to Hazelight to take responsibility for the audio production on It Takes Two. In our exclusive video, Philip and Anne-Sophie discuss the process of sound design in game audio — revealing how recording underwater with hydrophones, home-made kazoos and the use of slime and compressed air all played a part in their latest project!
And then this usually translates pretty well to headphones. We found that not only does its smart calibration system provide an enormous advantage, the Genelec brand also has a fantastic reputation in the industry.
All three editing suites are equipped with nearfield monitors. For the immersive room, the designers chose the three-way coaxial s for the LCR positions, and s for the surround and overhead channels - with a subwoofer delivering the lower frequencies. The entire system has been finely calibrated to produce the most accurate sounds for us to be able to create with confidence. The new audio production spaces have already proven to be advantageous to XD Inc. The facility has received unanimous praise from the entire audio team, with the monitors proving particularly popular.
A building with lots of history, it has remained dedicated to entertainment and hospitality since its beginnings in A Genelec Series sound system ensures that the pulse never stops. The combination of comfortable, attractive seating areas, cocktails, oysters and champagne, generous opening hours and excellent music has proved extremely popular with hotel guests and Stockholm residents alike.
AV integration specialists, Hages , were engaged to design and install a fully integrated sound system capable of delivering a high quality, relaxed music experience during the day as well as high energy DJ sessions for the evening crowd.
Genelec is an ideal choice for this type of installation where sound quality, tonal balance and high reliability are paramount. It's difficult to beat Genelec sound quality and reliability. Plus there was already an existing Genelec system in the bar upstairs that the client was very happy with, so it made Genelec a very easy choice.
This is an important point when you're tight on space - and they also look great in the areas where they are visible. However, for the Watson's Bar installation, the majority of the loudspeakers are completely hidden; five s are concealed behind grilles over wall-hanging shelves down the sides of the bar, and the sub is neatly hidden in a specially built compartment under a sofa. Four powerful white s grace the upper bar. A DJ output as well as a central music solution is housed in a technical cabinet behind the bar.
Both hotel guests and Stockholmers alike seem to have found a common meeting place to relax and enjoy great food and amazing cocktails in an atmosphere of jazz, funk and soul. Since their beginnings in , the company has opened seven more restaurants and a cocktail bar in the Finnish capital of Helsinki and employs around people. Farang , their flagship venue, has recently relocated to stunning new premises spread over two floors offering both public and private dining facilities plus a large bar.

Pro Audio: Three-Way Systems. Read More. Still, there are limits to the performance of any entry-level subwoofer, such as the models in our best budget subwoofer guide. Anyone who is serious about sound quality—and especially anyone who prefers hip-hop, heavy rock, or action movies—will be happy they bought a high-performance subwoofer rather than a budget model.
Subwoofers are like power tools, where an increase in power almost always costs substantially more but almost always results in noticeably better performance. Note that subwoofers are far more affected by room acoustics than other speakers are. This means that the shape and size of a room, and the positions of the subwoofer and the listening chair or couch, may emphasize certain bass tones and cancel others. Many audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts combat this phenomenon by using two or four subwoofers, which makes the bass sound more even as you move from seat to seat.
If you care about whether your system delivers quality sound across several seats in your room, it may be a better idea to buy two relatively inexpensive subwoofers than to upgrade to a more expensive single subwoofer—but as I found when I compared one-, two- and four-subwoofer systems , a single, more powerful subwoofer can be a better choice when you have only one or two listeners. Based on our experience in producing our best budget subwoofer guide, we settled on a few criteria for the subwoofers we would consider for this test:.
We evaluated a total of 19 models for this guide. You can read our comments about the subwoofers we tested in the Competition section below. I used a crossover point the frequency at which sounds are redirected from the speakers to the subwoofer of 80 hertz, which is the industry standard for high-quality surround-sound systems. I matched their levels to within 0. A tuba would have to measure about 9 feet tall to play that low. I also used bass-heavy action-movie soundtracks—most notably, the opening scene of Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, in which a spaceship flies overhead and then explodes.
When you use a subwoofer with an 80 Hz crossover, the subwoofer reproduces the fundamental tones of only the lowest 12 notes of a standard upright or electric bass; higher notes on the bass come primarily from the main speakers. I presented the subwoofers in random order, and I changed the order for each panelist. I finished by running CEA output measurements on each subwoofer. This measurement uses test tones that simulate the bass content of music and movies. When played through the subwoofers and viewed on an audio spectrum analyzer, these tones show how loudly and clearly a subwoofer can play at several different frequencies in the bass range.
I keep a log of all my CEA results. The chart below shows the CEA results for our top picks and a few other subs we tested including the Dayton Audio SUB , the top pick from our best budget subwoofer guide. The Rogersound Labs Speedwoofer 10S offers practically everything one could want in a midpriced subwoofer. For its size and price, it provides plenty of output for action movies and bassy hip-hop and EDM recordings, and our testing panel found that its clarity and precision matched or exceeded that of many more expensive subwoofers we tried.
The Speedwoofer 10S is one of the relatively rare subwoofers that sound equally great with music and movies. Ron picked it as his second-favorite; Dan ranked it in the middle of the pack. When it came to measured performance, the Speedwoofer 10S did just what we hoped an upscale subwoofer would do—it clearly outperformed less costly models such as the Dayton Audio SUB , our favorite budget subwoofer. The Speedwoofer 10S puts out about the same amount of midbass as the SUB, but when you get into the really low, couch-shaking deep-bass frequencies, the Speedwoofer 10S practically tosses the SUB out of the room, delivering a whopping 10 dB more output which is double the perceived volume at 20 Hz.
To put it more simply, the Speedwoofer 10S is just a lot more fun to listen to. The Speedwoofer 10S offers line-level RCA stereo inputs and outputs, which make it compatible with receivers that have a line-level subwoofer output included on all surround-sound AV receivers and some stereo receivers as well as with stereo systems having a separate amp and preamp.
Here I have to add a disclosure: When I was working as a consultant prior to my employment at Wirecutter, Rogersound Labs paid me to measure the CEA output of some prototype subs it was developing at the time. I also gave Rogersound my CEA measurement results for the Speedwoofer 10S at no charge which the company then published on its website.
It has a inch driver in a ported enclosure with a watt internal amp, and comes in your choice of faux black walnut or brown walnut wood grain for the same price. Lauren and Ron both ranked the HTS 10 highly, but they described it differently. In our tests, the average for the midbass 40 to 63 Hz was The HTS 10, in contrast, not only looks better when new but is more likely to keep its looks over time. The HTS 10 has line-level RCA inputs, so it will work with any receiver that has a subwoofer output, or with a stereo preamp.
If you need an inexpensive sub to add to a stereo system without subwoofer or preamp outputs, get the Dayton Audio SUB or step up to the Rogersound Speedwoofer 10S.
